Warning: Before proceeding with this installation, uninstall any currently installed antivirus software, including previous versions of the Symantec or Norton Antivirus clients. Then reboot the machine. Details can be found in our Removing Programs guide
Part 1: Download Virus Definitions
Go to http://www.sarc.com/avcenter/defs.download.html and save the latest definitions to your desktop.
Part 2: Download Symantec Client Installation File
- If you are on campus visit http://antivirus.uconn.edu/
- If you are off campus, see Off Campus Access

- Click on the appropriate download for your system. If the download does not begin, hold down the Ctrl key, and click the link to download. At the download options prompt, click the Save button.

- In the Save As window, select the Desktop from the Save in dropdown menu.

Part 3: Installing the antivirus
- Click 'Run' or double-click the file to begin installation. If you receive an Open File - Security Warning popup, click Run.
- Click install to begin the installation wizard.

- Agree to the license agreement and click next.

- Choose Client Install and click next.

- Choose complete and click next.

- Choose unmanaged and click next.

- Leave the default Auto Protect and Run LiveUpdate boxes checked. Click next.

- Choose install to begin the installation.

- You will see the progress of the installation.

- When it has completed, click Finish.

Part 4: Update your definitions
- After the installation has completed, run the virus definitions file you saved to the desktop in step 1. This will search for and install updates to your new Symantec Installation.
Reboot your computer. The next time you login, you will notice the Symantec yellow shield in your system tray.

- Double-click on the yellow shield to open the Symantec Antivirus window.
- In the window that opens, check to make sure your virus definitions are recent. If they have not been updated, enable the firewall, plug into the network and click the liveupdate button.

- When liveupdate begins, click next.

- The program will then search if there are updates available.

- If updates are available, the program will begin to download them.

- When the downloads are downloaded and installed, you will see a green check box window. Click finish.
