Spyware is a general term for software which spies on your computer's internet activity, stores that data, and sends it to the host company for analysis for marketing or other purposes.
Adware not the program Ad Aware, stands for Ad Software. It is a general term for programs which display advertisements, and are often installed and run without the user's knowledge or consent. Both Spyware and Adware can slow your computer down and may also cause popup advertisements while you use your computer. Spyware and Adware often come bundled with "free" applications that you may see for download around the web. Some examples of programs that may include Adware and Spyware are peer-to-peer (p2p) applications (such as KaZaA), and weatherbug or time updating applications.
