An Expanded Threat virus scan using Symantec Antivirus (version 9 or greater) will also take care of some adware and spyware programs that the above programs could not fix.
To enable scanning for "Expanded Threats" follow these steps:
- Start your computer in Safe Mode.
- Open the virus scanner (double click on the gold shield in the taskbar).
- Select Scan Computer from the left Window Frame.
- In the Scan Computer menu, check the box next to your computer's harddrive, and then click options.
- Check the boxes Scan in-memory threats and Scan for expanded threats. Move the slider next to Priority when not idle all the way to the right.
- In the top-right there is a tab labeled Macro Virus with one to the right called Non-macro Virus. Keep going to the right until you see the Expanded Threats tab.
- Select Delete infected file for Action.
- Click the Save Settings button in the bottom-right.
- Click OK
- Click Scan. The window shown below will appear as your computer is scanned. Depending on your computer and how many files you have, a scan could take ten minutes to a few hours.
