Spybot Search & Destroy works in much the same way as Ad-Aware. Although Spybot fulfills the same role as Ad-Aware, it may pick up some different malicious programs/files than the former, so it is good to have and run both programs.

How to Update Spybot

1. Click Search for Updates.
2. You will then see a search box that will show the progress of update searching. After the updates have been found this window will disappear.
3. Click Download all available updates.
4. Another progress box will show up, this time with the progress of the updates downloading. This may take a few minutes. The window may disappear and a black window will show up and then disappear, but this is normal.
5. When the updates have completed downloading, you will be brought to the main Spybot screen. From now on you can follow the regular Spybot directions below. You will not be presented with the Wizard screens again.
6. YOU MUST NOW IMMUNIZE THE COMPUTER BY FOLLOWING THE STEPS BELOW.

How to Immunize Spybot

1. Select Immunize from the left-hand column.
2. At the immunize screen, click Immunize, which is at the top next to the green cross.
3. This may take a few moments. When it is finished the status will read "Check for protection has finished." Next to a green checkmark, it will say "All known bad products are already blocked."
4. AFTER IMMUNIZING, YOU WILL BE READY

How to run Spybot

1. Restart your computer in Safe Mode and open the program.
2. Click Check for Problems
3. When the scan is complete, right-click on any of the entries listed and choose Select all
4. After all boxes are checked, click Fix Selected Problems
