Ad-Aware, by Lavasoft, is one of the most popular programs for removing spyware and adware. This page will explain how to download the program for free, and how to run it in order to remove threats to your computer.
Updating Ad-Aware
- Open Ad-Aware
- Click on the Check for updates now link to begin the update process
- Click on Connect. The program will then access the Ad-Aware servers to check if there is an updated definition file. In order to do this you must be connected to the internet.
- If the updates are downloading properly, you will see an update status window
- After the updates have properly downloaded, they will automatically be installed for you to use
Running Ad-Aware
- In order to properly run Ad-Aware, it is suggested that you run the program in Safe Mode.
- Click Start.
- You will then see the Preparing System Scan window. Choose Use custom scanning options and click customize
- Make sure that Scan within archives is checked. Then click proceed.
- You will then be brought back to the Preparing System scan window. Click Next to begin the scan.
- When the scan has finished, hit Next to see what types of Adware was found.
- Check all the boxes in order to remove all threats found. You can easily check all the boxes by right clicking on one of them and choosing Select All.
- Ad-aware will ask to make certain you want to delete these files. Click OK
