Windows 95/98
- Installng the updates
- Connect to the Windows Update page
- This page should be accessible even if the computer has been blocked by UITS
- There may be a prompt to accept some software installed on the machine. Click OK if this occurs.
- Click the Scan for Updates link when it appears
- This will determine the operating system and what updates are needed.

- After this process is completed, click Critical Updates and Service Packs in the bar on the left

- Be sure that every update and service pack is checked off.
- Any updates that are not selected will not be installed.
- If any say that they need to be installed separately, you will be prompted to install them one at a time. All should still be selected.
- Click the Review and Install Updates link at the top of the list

- Click Install Now

- Click Accept to accept the licensing agreement

- The Windows Update -- Web Page Dialog window should appear at this point.
- It might take a while if a service pack is being installed
- Once it is all done, the website will say Update Complete

- You may need to restart the computer at this point. Save any open documents you have and click OK
- If this window does not come up after the updates are installed (if any were installed), restart the computer anyway.

- After the computer restarts, connect to the Windows Update site again
- If there are any Critical Updates or Service Packs to be installed, repeat the steps above until there are none left.
- Now Automatic Updates should be enabled in order to ensure that all future updates are installed.
- Configuring Automatic Updates in Windows 95/98
- Click on the Start Menu, then Settings, and Control Panel
- Select the Automatic Updates option in the Control Panel
- Set it to Automatically download the updates.

Windows Me

Windows XP
- Installing Current Updates
- Connect to the Windows Update page
- If any windows from the Microsoft site appear, click OK. A newer version of Windows Updater may need to be installed.

- Click on Express Install to install all the critical updates
- Be sure that all the service packs and critical updates are selected in the list. Some may have a note explaining that they need to be installed separately from the others to avoid conflicts and potential errors.

- Restart the computer, even if not prompted

- Go back to the windowsupdate site and repeat the above steps until no critical updates remain
- Follow the instructions below to ensure that all future updates will be installed.
- Setting up Automatic Updates
- Once all current updates are installed, it is important to ensure that all future updates are installed in order to prevent viruses and other security compromises.
- To do this:
- Click on the Start menu
- Click on Control Panel and then Security Center

- In the window that pops up, select the Automatic Updates link that appears. It has a planet with a Microsoft flag next to it.

- In the new window, there is a series of four radio buttons along the left side.
- Select the first one, which is Automatic
- In the drop-down menu, Every day should be selected
- The time selected should be when the computer is most likely to be on during the day.
