Computer Requirements

ResNet will attempt to connect any computer purchased in the last four years

Hardware

There is no hardware requirement set by the university but below are recommendations that will ensure better usage on the network:

Processor:
  • PC: Pentium III or better or equivalent
  • MAC: Power PC G4 or better

RAM: minimum of 512 MB

Hard drive: minimum of 20 GB (current standard on new computers is 40 GB)

Network Card: 10/100 Base-T Ethernet Cards (most internal network cards will work)

Ethernet Cable:
  • Category 5 (Cat5)
  • 25 feet will reach around most rooms depending on furniture placement

Splitter: some areas will need to split their internet connection (North, Hale, Ellsworth, McMahon, Alumni, Buckley, East, West)

Wireless: There are different needs for wireless based on where you are trying to connect.

Any other type of hardware must be supported by the user--we will not provide any assistance beyond supplying the necessary configuration information

Software

There is no software requirement set by the university but below are recommendations that will ensure better usage on the network:

Operating System:
  • PC: Windows 2000 SP4 or Windows XP (with SP2)
  • MAC: OS 10.3 or better

Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.) or equivalent software

Antivirus Software (Symantec Antivirus provided to UCONN students for free)

Firewall

  • Windows XP: use the included firewall
  • Windows 2000: Zone Alarm is suggested
  • MAC: not needed

**Check with academic departments**

Any other Operating system (Linux, BeOS, Unix, Windows 3.x, etc) must be supported by the user--we will not provide any assistance beyond supplying the necessary configuration information

Wireless

  • Use of wireless is optional.
  • There is no wireless in the residence halls unless a student brings his or her own router. If you see access available in the residence halls do not connect to it without permission of the owner
  • To use a router in the residence halls it must be registered with ResNet
  • For use elsewhere on campus, you will a need 802.11b/g wireless network adapter. (Most internal wireless cards will work)
